Frequently Asked Questions

If you're about to begin a travel writing/editing project, you may wonder whether to hire a freelance travel writer with extensive experience or an agency. Here are answers to the questions I am most commonly asked when travel companies contact me.

What exactly is turnkey "editorial project management"?

I've spent more than two decades sharpening my skills as an editorial project manager. That means I can shepherd any project—from beginning to end—for your company in which the deliverables include any manner of editorial, marketing content, or marketing collat-eral. That means everything from kick-starting the project to identifying your target market to brainstorming an editorial plan that will reach your customers to writing persuasive copy (or hiring other travel experts to do so) to editing text, curating imagery, and perfecting your call to action (CTA) before deploying the project into the marketplace.

Some examples of editorial project management in action include:

• blog management

I handle everything from brainstorming post ideas to researching SEO keywords to writing and editing text to honing the call to action (CTA) to curating imagery to uploading the post to the content management system (CMS) to crafting social media messages that will pro-mote the post.

• developing an eBook (like a travel guidebook or trip planner)

A project like this, for retail sale or to be used as a marketing tool/lead magnet, starts with drafting the book's table of contents, researching the content, authoring (or finding an ex-pert author) the book, and then fact-checking, editing, and selecting images before collabo-rating with a graphic designer and/or printer.

No matter what type of assignment I'm managing, I handle all of the details and work as a liaison between my client and everyone else involved in the project, including in-house staff plus freelance writers, editors, SEO specialists, photographers, designers, and more. I take the hassle out of editorial content creation. Let me worry about the who, what, where, and when so you can focus on the most important thing: the why that motivates everything your company does.

Are you a sole proprietor or a full-service editorial agency?

I'm a sole proprietor doing business as Due South Digital. Depending on the scope of your project, you can hire just me or allow me to put together a team of heavy-hitters to ac-complish your editorial or content marketing goals.

If we hire you to put together a team for a big project, where will you find the talent?

With a background in magazine, book, and online publishing that began in New York City in the early 1990s, I have a deep network that includes writers with all sorts of specialties, developmental editors, copy editors, proofreaders, SEO specialists, designers, photogra-phers, and more. I'm also an active member of many organizations for writers and continu-ally make new contacts in all facets of the business.

Why should we hire you and not a content marketing agency or public relations firm?

It's simple. Hiring me is all about the value proposition. As a "boutique" agency, I take on a smaller number of clients and devote my utmost attention to each and every one. You'll receive more personal attention from me than you might from a large agency and my pric-ing will certainly be lower. Remember, an agency will likely hire a writer and/or editor to work on your project. When you work with me, you're working directly with the writer and editor. And, even when I'm called to manage a large project in which I manage a team of writers that I hire, I have less overhead and therefore don't need to bulk up the fee in or-der to source top professionals to work on your project.

How much do you charge?

Pricing for editorial projects is based on many factors. Once I know more about your needs and budget, I can provide a proposal with suggested pricing. Fill out this form and tell me about your project so we can get the estimation process rolling.

Who are some of your clients?

I've collaborated with brands like TripAdvisor, Viator, Fodor’s, Cruise Critic, Conde Nast Traveler, Architectural Digest, Priceline, Oyster, Thomas Cook, Ancestry.com, Barnes & Noble, and others.
