Before you embark on your next writing project, consider hiring an experienced travel writer who has worked with top companies in the industry. Here’s a look at some projects of which I’m especially proud.

Cruise Critic Editing and Writing

In 2018, I celebrated my 10th anniversary as a Cruise Critic freelance editor and writer. In that time, I’ve written dozens of cruise and ship reviews, destination profiles, and service features. For the past handful of years, I’ve also been on contract as a copy editor… the last set of eyes to review a story before it goes live on the website.

Here are links to some of the stories I’ve written recently for Cruise Critic:

NEA Travel Monthly Newsletter

The National Education Association believes that teachers are better equipped in the classroom when they’ve had the opportunity to travel the world and learn from other cultures. However, for many educators, traveling is beyond their budget. Enter NEA Travel. I create this monthly email newsletter for the NEA with the goal of teaching educators how to travel more often for less money. It’s a privilege to play a role in this project. I’ve developed articles that explain everything from how to travel on a grant to teaching overseas to visiting U.S.-based amusement parks without taking out a second mortgage.

As the content marketing producer for NEA Travel, I collaborate with the in-house stakeholders at NEA Member Benefits; brainstorm story ideas and create the editorial calendar; assign stories to freelance writers; edit all text; liaison with my team of copywriters, copy editors, and SEO specialists; select photographs; and mockup each issue using Adobe InDesign.

Ancestry.com Historical Insights

Acting as the freelance content editor for Ancestry.com’s Historical Insights initiative was a career highlight. This three-year program used stories to help provide historical context to what likely shaped our ancestors’ lives. I shepherded a team of freelance writers as they created stories for Ancestry subscribers based on actual events throughout history.

My role included…

  • creating the project’s style guide
  • developing processes and procedures to streamline the writing, fact-checking, editing, and archiving of project deliverables
  • recruiting, training, and coaching freelance writers
  • edited a high volume of weekly writing assignments
  • provided feedback on quality of the text, historical accuracy, and the writer’s ability to meet weekly writing quotas
  • maintained collaboration tool and content library (Microsoft SharePoint)
  • mentored team members on how to best leverage the content library
  • managed the relationship between internal teams at Ancestry.com and the team of remote freelance writers
  • assisted with photo selection
